A little bit about me...

I grew up in a small town in rural Alabama. I completed my Bachelor's degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), majoring in Psychology with a minor in Chemistry. It was at UAB where I fell in love with research. When I started college, I thought I was going to be a clinical psychologist because I enjoy helping people reach their fullest potential and overcome obstacles in life. As a part of the program I was involved in, I participated in scientific research and once I started doing research I never wanted to stop.

I did research in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology where I got to work on locating where a particular protein was concentrated in the mouse brain using techniques called immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. I fell in love with neuroscience and a new world was opened to me through my experiences in lab.

Now I've gone on to pursue my PhD at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine where I'm studying Physiology and Biophysics. I'm looking again at proteins, but this time I'm looking at them much more closely using a technique called electrophysiology (which is the best technique- in my humble opinion). This technique allows me to measure the flow of ions like potassium, sodium, and calcium through proteins that open and close during the normal cycle of the heartbeat (or during electrical/chemical activity in the brain).

I am still passionate about helping others reach their fullest potential and I plan to do so by mentoring new students/trainees in the lab now and in the future as an independent scientist. One of my favorite parts about science and the scientific community is the collaborative environment that is fostered by the common pursuit of the truth. By empowering one another, we also empower the scientific discoveries that revolutionize medicine and technology.

In the time I don't spend in lab, I'm  an active person. You can find me at the gym lifting weights, doing yoga, or outside running or kayaking/paddleboarding. You'll rarely see me without a coffee in my hand and I love exploring new coffee shops in the city. Connecting with new people brings me joy so feel free to contact me through the form on my home page.
